SHORT PIECES

Some things George has written over the years, magazine pieces, excerpts from novels, thoughts on various subjects.

PARADISIAC

A new short story about that oldest of stories.

MY SON'S NAME

A piece about the naming of my son, Brooklyn.

ON DISSENT

This was written in the aftermath of 9/11 during Iraq war when anyone who wrote critically about President Bush's decisions was branded a traitor by figures in his administration. Of course, times have changed. President Obama has been called all kinds of things without members of his staff charging anyone with treason. Apparently it's still a free country.

THE SOCK

This piece is more about the potential warfare between work-addled parents and a reminder of the noble mission of raising children.

CROSSING CONTINENTS

A piece that explains one of the themes of THE LAMENTS, cross-cultural clash, the difficult adjustment my family made when they came to America and realized that their previous country was considered a nest of villains!

EXCERPT FROM "THE LAMENTS"

Exactly that. First chapter. A bit funny, a bit tragic. Incidentally, Hagen was told by a Scotsman that his imitation of a Scottish burr was way off the mark. He apologizes in advance.
